Barcelona remain confident that Ousmane Dembele will sign a new contract with the club and that the deal will help free up space for further transfers in January.

Club boss Xavi Hernandez wants the Frenchman to extend his stay at Camp Nou, despite the player’s fine for being three minutes late at a training session in November.

Barca have already finalized the signing of Ferran Torres from Manchester City for an initial £ 46million, with potential additions meaning the deal could reach up to £ 54million.

Dembele has just five months to complete his current Camp Nou contract and could leave for free in June – while he is now free to talk to other clubs and make a pre-contractual deal.

Dembele’s future now remains uncertain, but he looks more and more willing to leave the Catalan giants this year, either at a discount in January or as a free agent in the summer.

The 24-year-old has suffered an injury for four seasons at the Blaugrana and the club’s well-documented precarious financial situation means he has to cut costs.

Barca have offered Dembele a new contract on reduced terms, but the player’s representatives have not given a positive response to the proposal and his future may now be moving away from the club.

However, Xavi remains optimistic that the player will accept a new contract in Catalonia and his reduced terms will help free up wages for the club to continue investing in January.

He commented on the striker’s contractual situation: “I am not disappointed.

“It’s a negotiation. Sometimes advisers and agents can be difficult. But Barca’s position is clear and the process is ongoing.

“I am optimistic and I hope that Ousmane will make an effort [to renew]. He has a fantastic offer. There is always a back and forth. “

The coach added that a new contract for Dembele would see the club register “one or two signings” in January – having already made deals for Dani Alves and Torres.

The club’s deal for Dembele is somewhat convoluted, and a new contract for the player would mean they could spread the unpaid amortization payments over the transfer fees paid for him five years ago over the term of any new one. OK.

The funds the move would free up would allow Barca to add more signings in the near term as the Catalan giants look to further strengthen their squad in January.

Dembele has been linked with several Premier League clubs including Manchester United, Liverpool and Newcastle.

His future remains uncertain and he is currently free to discuss pre-contractual conditions with clubs outside Spain.
